COTABATO CITY (MindaNews/18 March) -- In recent years major armed conflicts have been originating within states rather than between states. Many of these intra-state conflicts are driven by people’s aspiration to exercise their right to self-determination, whether explicitly stated or not. Since right of self-determination is enshrined in international law as fundamental right of peoples who hold the right, its application can contribute considerably in prevention and resolution of conflicts. This is probably the reason why the Government of the Republic of the Philippines proposed to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front discussion on the Bangsamoro people’s right to self-determination when the negotiating panels resume their talk. This piece, in question and answer form, is a modest contribution to the discussion on right of self-determination. This is not a legal or scholarly interpretation but a layman’s view of this fundamental right. |
