Diorama of Maitum artifacts opens May 5; Maitum site declared “important cultural property”

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/24 April) –  A diorama of the famous anthropomorphic secondary burial jars will be inaugurated at the town hall of Maitum, Sarangani province on May 5, as part of the  50th anniversary celebration of the town.

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/22 April) – The National Museum has ordered the transport of the remaining 17 of 22 bags of cultural artifacts seized August last year by the police in Maitum, Sarangani, as a study on the five sacks earlier transported to Manila revealed that the makers of the confiscated anthropomorphic pottery, were, indeed, “ a distinct or separate group that most likely had contact with the group who made and used the pottery from Ayub.”

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/16 October) – An association of archaeologists wants an end to alleged illicit trading of our cultural heritage as it commended the local government of Maitum in Sarangani province for vigilance in protecting artifacts whose origin, sale and transport were highly questionable.

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/22 September) – Vigilance by residents, the police, the local government in Maitum, Sarangani and the provincial government has paid off: five of the 22 sacks of cultural artifacts seized by the police last month have been transported to the National Museum as initial inspection by archaeologist Dr. Eusebio Dizon showed the shards from anthropomorphic burial jars are different from the now-famous “faces from Maitum.”

MAITUM, Sarangani (MindaNews/03 September) –  Twenty-two bags of  sherds similar to artifacts from the Metal Age anthropomorphic secondary burial jars discovered in Pinol cave here in 1991 were seized by  local police and the local government is holding on to the artifacts claiming these may have come from the same area.

 
National Museum to send proposed budget for more studies of Sagel Cave

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/27 April) – The National Museum is expected to send to the provincial government of Sarangani  a proposed budget to conduct further studies in Sagel Cave in  Barangay Pinol, Maitum, Sarangani, which a five-person team sent there two weeks ago said was “used as a burial ground in prehistory.”
