Tuna industry seeks vessel day scheme

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/29 January) --  Tuna industry players in the country have proposed a measure that seeks to lessen the impact of the closure of portions of the Pacific Ocean to purse seine fishing, a local fishing industry official said on Thursday.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/7 Jan) -- Swine producers in Mindanao want to make the island a separate biosecurity region so they could push anew the move to ship cut pork products abroad. 

The Philippines’ first attempt at exporting pork meat products was supposed to start in December 2008, only to be obstructed by the detection of the ebola reston virus in hog farms in Luzon.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/22 December) – The usually cold mist that blows early dawn over the calm Sarangani Bay suddenly turned warm as another fishing vessel maneuvered towards the pier of the fishport complex at the coastal village of Tambler here.

Weary port workers clad in a mix of grayish white and light blue uniforms then slowly moved towards the end of the pier as the vessel let out a loud burst from one of its fog horns to signal its final approach to the dock to unload its prized catch of various prime tuna.

Moments later, another group of workers scurried towards the other side of the pier as another vessel made its final approach for another delivery of high-grade tuna, which came from as far as the high Pacific seas.


 
MAAS calls on Agri Sec Yap to ban aerial spray

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/06 November) – Members of the Mamamayan Ayaw sa Aerial Spraying (MAAS)  are calling on Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap to fulfill his promise to issue an administrative order banning aerial spraying now that the Department of Health (DOH) has asked his department to stop aerial spraying of pesticides in agricultural plantations “until proof of its safety is clearly established by the industry.”

MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews/30 Sept) -- Yellow corn is mainly used for livestock feed production. 

In 2008, the Philippines, which accounts for one percent of world corn output, produced 3.29 million metric tons of corn in the first half, slightly higher than its goal of 3.22 million tons.
