DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/29 Aug) -- We all die. Everybody knows that.
But before we die, we get sick. More often than not, we get very, very sick before we finally die.
As a matter of fact, between now and the time we die, we will probably get sick a few times. This is inevitable. But nobody wants to prepare for that. People do not even want to consider it. |

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/22 August) – A lawyer, an engineer and an agriculturist go up to heaven for their just rewards. At the pearly gates, they meet St. Peter who acknowledges their right to enter heaven but remands them to the side while he is waiting for a very important person to arrive. Soon, a doctor appears, apparently shortly after his surgery. He is dressed in a scrub suit and is still wearing his surgical cap. His surgical mask is pushed down his chin, and he is smoking a cigarette with relish. |

The problem of medical economics is part of the problem of world economics and is inseparable and indivisible from it. Medicine, as we are practicing it today, is a luxury trade. We are selling bread for the price of jewels. The poor who comprise 80% of our population cannot pay and starve; the doctors cannot sell and suffer. The people have no health protection and the doctors, no economic security. DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/11 August) -- I wish I said that. |

(Speech of acceptance as one of the Ten Outstanding Boholano Award (Tobaw) delivered at the Tapok Bol-anon Tibuok Kalibutan awarding ceremonies on 25 July).
TAGBILARAN, Bohol (MindaNews/28 July) -- I accept this award both with great pride and humility. I dedicate this award to my late parents who came from Bohol; my father from Bilar, and my mother, a Manigque from Tagbilaran. My mother, who died a few months ago, lived 63 out of her 86 years in Mindanao. But she died a true Boholana, speaking Binol-anon to the end. |

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/21 July) -- The problems of health care delivery in the Philippines are tremendous and overwhelming. Traditionally, the sector that bears the brunt of these problems has been the so-called Health Care Benefactors: doctors, nurses and those engaged in allied medical professions. And the venue for the health services given by these Benefactors has been traditionally the Hospital. It is not openly acknowledged, or is conveniently forgotten that Health is a multi-sectoral concern. |

(Speech delivered at the Diamonds In The Rough awards rites on March 3 at the Century Park Sheraton hotel in Manila). Today, we award three young doctors for their service to the Filipino people in the countryside. We acknowledge their sacrifice and dedication in selflessly giving themselves to meet the health needs of those who have less in life, especially in the countryside where resources are extremely scarce. We praise their sense of loyalty to the Filipino people who badly need their presence and expertise to help them cope with the innumerable health challenges that confront the poor people in the provinces every day. In short, we are giving the diamonds in the rough awards to these young doctors for doing exactly what every Tomas, Ricardo and Hilario of a Filipino doctor is expected to do in the first place! |
