ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/07 April) -- I was invited to do a prayer at the Baccalaureate Ceremony prior to the Commencement Exercises at MSU-IIT. The event will be on Thursday, April 8, 2010. But I embellished the prayer for this column.  I hope the reader will find this prayer interesting enough.

A SOJOURNER'S VIEW: Oh what have they done to our cultural icons! By Karl Gaspar

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/09 Feb) -- Years ago (in what seems like another lifetime) I was in a Novitiate in Lipa City (long before Ate Vi became the celebrated Mayor). I was with ten other novices who were years younger than me as I was a "late" vocation (one of the few times in my life I was ever late and that is the truth - go ask the people who were "terrorized" by my being a boss who insisted on being prompt when reporting for work).

ILIGAN CITY  (MindaNews/30 December) -- Only two days left and we finally say goodbye to what we might consider  the annus horibilis of our recent lives, the year 2009.  As this current year closes, our collective general feeling could be summed up in these words:  what a good riddance, indeed!

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/07 November) -- Very early this morning (7 November), I got this text from a friend: Rey Teves died dis dawn...In ICU ysterday, sever pneumonia...  During the course of the day, there were many texts sent by friends who knew Rey basically repeating the same information.

I had left my youth many years ago. But part of the memory of that period of my life came back after reading the text. That memory is of Rey standing on the stage of the Holy Cross Academy Boys Department, my high school alma mater in Digos City.

A SOJOURNER'S VIEW: Jubilee at a time of great tragedy. By Karl M. Gaspar CSsR

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/29 Sept) -- What is it about human existence that makes possible the iconic image associated with theatre where the face of jubilant joy can be placed side by side with the face of utter sadness?

Such a philosophical musing struck me early morning of Sunday, September 27, the day after the great flood that rampaged across parts of Metro Manila, Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog.  It wasn't until I finally watched TV footages of the floods that devastated the National Capital Region that I had an idea as to the extent of the tragedy that came with the record-breaking rains and strong winds throughout Saturday, September 26.

A SOJOURNER'S VIEWS: Beyond the ugliness of war is a terrible beauty, By Karl M. Gaspar

A Review of Tanghalan Pilipino's Madonna Brava ng Mindanao

War is ugly! And -- as every peace advocate knows -- it diminishes people's human dignity; it crushes their soul. From an ecologist's point of view, it is bad news for the environment. From a Christian's perspective, it goes against Jesus's words that blessed are the peacemakers!
