KIDAPAWAN CITY (MindaNews/30 April) – Five towns in North Cotabato have been declared under a state of calamity by the provincial board in the wake of flashfloods last week caused by non-stop heavy rains. Data from the provincial government showed that some 8,500 hectares of lands planted to rice, corn, and vegetables were damaged by the floods. The most affected towns were Pigcawayan, Libungan, Midsayap, Aleosan, and Pikit, all in the first district. Since Monday, the provincial social welfare and development office have been distributing rice to about 900 families affected by the disaster. Provincial social welfare officer Virgilita Guilaran said the local government has allotted some funds for additional assistance. She said she already instructed social workers in these towns to coordinate with the provincial LGU in relief and food distribution. At least 40 percent of Pigcawayan’s 30 villages were flooded since Friday. Pigcawayan is one of the rice granaries of North Cotabato. Due to continued rains, irrigation canals in Pigcawayan overflowed and destroyed crops in seven villages, mostly rice and corn. In a session last Tuesday, North Cotabato Vice Governor Emmanuel Pinol urged Governor Jesus Sacdalan and town officials to release immediately part of their calamity funds to assist thousands of farmers affected by the flashfloods.
