ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/11 August) -- Seventeen students from four schools here who were infected with the influenza A(H1N1) virus have fully recovered after undergoing medication, the city health office said.

Dr. Livey Villarin, city health officer said patients came from St. Peter’s College, La Salle Academy, Mindanao State University-IIT, and City Central Elementary School.

Villarin said that “although the virus manifestations are mild, still, precautions are needed especially by those considered as high-risks specially the infants and the aged.

MSU-IIT and La Salle Academy suspended classes Thursday last week after receiving confirmation that two of their students were infected with A(H1N1).  Both schools underwent sanitation.

“It is the option of schools to suspend classes if they are able to identify those with flu-like symptoms and advise them to go home and rest or self-quarantine from 7 to 10 days,” Villarin said.

She urged schools to have an aggressive monitoring system to avert the unnecessary spread of the virus and ask everyone to frequently wash hands and use sanitizers.

A(H1N1) virus is a communicable illness that can be rapidly transferred through sneezing and coughing.

Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz asked city health officials including barangay health workers and barangay nutrition scholars to expand their monitoring against this illness.

He asked residents not to be too alarmed by reports of swine flu infections, as the patients have already undergone medication. (Violeta M. Gloria/Mindanews)
