PROVINCE OF DAVAO ORIENTAL — A new extension campus of Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology (DOSCST) is set to rise in Cateel town after its old building was torn apart by typhoon Pablo two years ago.
The new campus is set to erect in the 2.5 hectares land situated in Sitio Mahan-ob, Barangay Mainit in Cateel secured through the initiative of Provincial Government, who intends to provide college students here a conducive and safe learning environment.
For the construction of two school buildings, the Commission on Higher Education Region XI has granted P25 million. CHED XI Regional Director, Dr. Raul C. Alvarez Jr., said this earmarked funds is also intended for the scholarship grants of deserving college students here.
During the ground breaking ceremony held at the new school site last November 27, 2014, Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon encouraged the college’s administration to continually inspire and educate the youngsters of Davao Oriental, particularly the survivors of Typhoon Pablo because she believes that the youth is always the hope of the fatherland and of this province.
She also urged the students for an active participation to academic endeavors and engagement in different government undertakings because these will always benefit them, and another way also to respond positively from the government initiatives, academe’s efforts and their parents’ sacrifices.
The provincial governor thanked DOSCST not just in providing the province an access for affordable yet quality tertiary education but also for producing high-caliber graduates that contributed to the province’s vision and mission.
Particularly, she lauded the unselfish efforts of the DOSCST alumni-engineers who built core-houses under the Modified Shelter Assistance Program, Cateel River Irrigation Dam, Aliwagwag Ecopark and other Tourism Sites Development and PAMANA Projects.
She also cited different heads of provincial departments who bestowed trust to the graduates of DOSCST by hiring them accordingly. She also noted the aide of the State College’s researchers that helped in the inscription of Mount Hamuigitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in UNESCO World Heritage List.
“DOSCST is a true partner of the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental when development is concern,” said Governor Malanyaon adding that “DOSCST is a brand already.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Edito B. Sumile, DOSCST President expressed his gratitude to the community of Cateel, to Governor Malanyaon, Commission on Higher Education, and DOSCST’s working force for the realization of another dream.
He said that the establishment of the 2 buildings is expected to be functional before June 2015, as a new academic year starts.
The State Universities and Colleges (SUC) President is also eyeing provision additional P10 million for a school building in lieu to the DPWH ocular inspection’s recommendation as well as the fencing of the property, which amounts to P1 million. He also consulted the Audit Commission for excess funds to be allocated in planned purchasing of multicab for the mobilization construction of Cateel Extensioon Campus.
As a response to the governor, he assures that DOSCST will continue to produce very good and responsible graduates for an excellent Davao Oriental while he also cited recent specific accomplishment of the college’s students such as the National Champion Title on Civil Engineering National Showdown and the remarkable 8th National Rank of a Criminology Graduate in 2014 Criminologist Licensure Examination.
“On behalf of the DOSCST Community and Board of Trustees, thank you for the unselfish support, Governor Corazon Malanyaon,” Dr. Sumile read the appreciation statement of the Board of Trustees, highest governing body of DOSCST.
The DOSCST-CEC is recently conducting classes at Cateel Central Elementary School after Typhoon Pablo ravaged their founding site near in the area also.
