Due to demand for Filipino nurses abroad, many students have taken up nursing hoping to land in lucrative jobs abroad.
However, thousands of Filipino nurses are either jobless or toiling under low pay in Philippine hospitals.
Recently, the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) enlisted 10,000 Filipino nurses under its Registered Nurse for Health Enhancement and Local Service (RN HEALS) programme, which is set to start on March 17 this year.
Health Secretary Enrique Ona said the RN Heals programme will deploy these nurses to the 1,000 poorest barangays in the country. They will be offered a monthly salary of P8,000.00 and an allowance of P2,000.00. (BenCyrus G. Ellorin/MindaNews)
