COTABATO CITY (MindaNews/24 September) — Rains spawned by a low pressure area this week have flooded eight towns in Maguindanao and affected 34,491families or 154,750 individuals , according to data from the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
The floods affected 12 barangays of Sultan sa Barongis, 12 in Pagalungan, 11 in Montawal, eight in Paglat, 17 in Mother Kabuntalan, seven in Buluan, all of the eight barangays in Mangudadatu, and another eight in Pandag.
Residents of Mangudadatu said that since their farms have been submerged they have to rely on fishing now for their daily sustenance.
An evacuation center has been set up behind the municipal hall, but some residents have refused to leave their homes while others went to their relatives in Buluan.
The provincial office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development said that many residents of other towns affected by the floods also opted to either go to their relatives or remain in their flooded homes.
The DSWD today distributed relief goods to flood victims in Buluan, Mangudadatu, Pandag and Sultan sa Barongis.
