40,000 families displaced by floods in NE Mindanao

MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews/14 January) — The number of people affected by floods spawned by a Low Pressure Area (LPA) over Mindanao has climbed to 40,640 families or 199,327 individuals, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

In its advisory as of 6am Tuesday, the NDRRMC said 10 landslides and five flooding incidents were reported in Regions 10, 11 and 13 (Caraga).

The floods hit 192 barangays in 48 municipalities in 10 provinces of the three regions that lie along the northeastern portions of Mindanao, it said.

The NDRRMC added that 15 have been reported dead, 34 injured, and 13 missing in Region 11 and Caraga.

A total of 54 roads and 17 bridges have been rendered impassable in the two regions, it said.

Saug River in Asuncion town and Libuganon River in Kapalong town, both in Davao del Norte, have overflowed, while irrigation dams in barangays Aragon andTaytayan in Cateel, Davao Oriental were damaged due to flooding, the advisory said.

In Davao Oriental, 8,284 hectares of agricultural crops were damaged, it added.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said that as of 4pm Tuesday, the LPA was estimated based on all available data at 60 kilometers north of Butuan City. (MindaNews)
