DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/19 January) – The Davao region’s four provinces and six cities are now under Public Storm Warning Signal number 1, the weather bureau’s 11 a.m. advisory said.
Signal 1 was earlier raised over 7 Mindanao provinces – Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte in Caraga region and Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley in the Davao region (Region 11 or Southeastern Mindanao).
But Weather Bulletin 9 of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical And Astronomical Sservices Administration (PAGASA) issued at 11 a.m. Sunday showed Signal 1 has been lifted in Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte and Dinagat Islands, remains hoisted over Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley, and now covers Davao del Norte and Davao Del Sur.
The addition of Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur makes for a total of four Davao provinces and six cities under Signal 1: Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley and the cities therein: Davao City which is between Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur; Davao del Norte’s Tagum, Samal and Panabo cities; Davao del Sur’s Digos and Davao Oriental’s Mati.
Davao Oriental Governor Corazon Malanyaon and Compostela Valley Governor Arturo Uy have ordered the suspension of classes in all levels in their provinces on Monday.
The weather bulletin said that as of 10 a.m. the center of tropical depression Agaton was estimated at at 205 km southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur or 230 km east of Davao City.
Agaton’s strength remains at 55 kph maximum winds near the center but its movement has accelerated from “almost stationary” Saturday, to 5 kph Sunday morning and is forecast to move southwest at 7 kph as of 10 a.m. Sunday.
By Monday morning, Agaton is expected at120 kms southeast of Davao City, 60 kms south of Gensan by Tuesday morning, and by Wednesday morning, at 220 kms southwest of General Santos City and out of Philippine Area of Responsibility.
Estimated rainfall amount, according to Weather Bulletin 9 remains from 5 – 15 mm per hour (moderate – heavy) within the 300 km diameter of Agaton.
Agaton is expected to bring “moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms” over Bohol, Siquijor, Northern Mindano and the rest of Caraga Region.
The Davao region, however, is alos experiencing moderate to occasionally heavy rains.
Sea travel is risky over the seaboards of Luzon, Visayas and Caraga Region, Weather Bulletin 9 said.
Forty persons have been killed in floods and landslides in Mindanao since January 12 due to a low pressure area that later developed into Tropical Depression Agaton, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in an update issued at 6 a.m. Sunday.
The Davao and Caraga regions posted the highest death toll at 18 each while Northern Mindanao posted two and Western Mindanao, one, the NDRRMC advisory said.
Sixty five others were injured and five reported missing in the same regions. (MindaNews)
