At least 37 Mindanao books published in 2013; 346 since 2000

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 02 February) — At least 37 Mindanao books were published in 2013, majority still on history and peacebuilding in the Bangsamoro, the dominant themes since 2000. But the 2013 harvest has three photobooks – two photographic guides to amphibians, reptiles and bats of Mindanao, and a photobook on the other faces and facets of Sulu.

In 2012, MindaNews listed only five, placing the total number of  books on Mindanao or written by Mindanawons from 2000 to 2013 at 346.

Of the 35 books published in 2013, three are photobooks; six are on history, including a coffeetable book on the Jesuits in Mindanao and the Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s centennial; two on governance in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM),  including a collection of stories on good governance winners.

Eight are on peacebuilding, three on literature, two on arts and architecture, five collections of essays, a first issue of a journal of an Islamic institute, a yearbook on Davao City, an e-book (Kindle edition) on self-medical diagnosis by a doctor from Davao City and three children’s books, two of them written and illustrated by UP Mindanao Professor Marcy Dans Lee: “Maylan and his toy top” and “Piagsupatan: Stories of the Mandaya.” Other illustrations in the latter were done by Conrad Raquel and Aldy Aguirre. Both books are on the Mandaya. “Piagsupatan” is Mandaya for “the horizon” while “Bagong Tulay, Bagong Buhay” is written by 11 children-survivors of super typhoon Pablo in Compostela Valley province.
