DepEd says enrollees in Region XI to increase by 800,000

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/24 March) — The Department of Education (DepEd) in Region XI expects enrollees for the elementary level to increase by 3% increase and for the secondary level by 4% next school year, an official said.

In a press conference held Friday at the Waterfront Insular Hotel, DepEd regional spokesperson Jenielito Atillo said this translates to a total increase of 803,834 students.

Enrolment for the current school year was 782,077 for the region.

Atillo added 1,565 new teachers have been hired for the coming school year.

The region needs 2,277 additional teachers.

“We are slowly closing the gap in the needs for teachers for the region,” Atillo said.

According to DepEd, Region XI has 1,632 public elementary schools and 301 public high schools, for the school year 2012-2013.

Davao del Sur had the most number of students in both elementary and high school, at 344,777 and 112,268 students, respectively.

Davao Oriental had the lowest total enrollees in the region, at 127,465 students for the same school year.

Davao City has 285 public elementary schools, with 197,571 students enrolled in the previous school year.

There are 70 public high schools in Davao City, with 73,403 total enrollees.

Magallanes Elementary School had the highest enrollment for 2013-2014, according to DepEd, at 6,012 students, with Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Sr. Central Elementary School having 4,290 students.

Also among the schools with the highest number of enrollees in the city for the previous school year were Don Juan dela Cruz Central Elementary School at 4,012 students and Buhangin Central Elementary School at 3,965.

Sta. Ana National High School had the highest number of enrollees, at 6,879 students.

The other schools with big populations were Daniel R. Aguinaldo High School, 6,403; F. Bangoy National High School, 4,500; and Dona Carmen Denia National High School, 4,090 students. (MindaNews)
