DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/01 June) — The Union of Peoples’ Lawyers in Mindanao (UPLM) condemned the shooting Friday night of lawyer Emmanuel Acuna Jr., an alumnus of the Ateneo de Davao Law School who passed away in a hospital on Sunday.
“This is yet another proof of the continuing state of impunity that still bedevil and plague our society…we register our strongest condemnation of this act! We demand no less than a speedy investigation from the authorities and bring to the bar of justice the perpetrators!,” Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate, also UPLM chair, said.
Zarate said Acuna, used to work at the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) assigned in Davao Oriental for about three years but recently resigned to go into private practice.
In a statement, Jeremy Eliab, Assistant to the President of the Ateneo de Davao University, also called for Justice for Acuna.
Eliab said Acuna was shot by a still unidentified gunman on Friday night at BPI parking area near SM Lanang Permiere.”
“Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced brain dead last night, and his body soon followed hours after,” Eliab said.
“I request for prayers for the rest of his soul and for the bereaved family of Eman,” Eliab wrot, ending his statement with a call for “Justice for Eman!” (MindaNews)
