DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/13 Jan) — The Davao City Council on Tuesday honored a Dabawenyo who was elected president of a university in New York last year.

In a resolution, the council honored the achievements of Conrado “Bobby” Gempesaw, who in July last year became the first Filipino to become president of St. John’s University in Queens, New York.

According to the university’s website, www.stjohns.edu, Gempesaw is the university’s 17th president.

Gempesaw earned his economics degree from Ateneo de Davao University, in Davao.

“Prior to his appointment at St. John’s, he served as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio,” the resolution authored by Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang said.

The university website said Gempesaw serves as president with “almost three decades of academic and administrative experience.”

Gempesaw was also Dean of the University of Delaware (UD) Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, Vice-Provost for Academic and International Programs, Interim Dean of UD’s College of Arts and Sciences, and Chair of the Department of Food and Resource Economics.

He received his graduate and post-graduate degrees from the West Virginia University and Pennsylvania State University, respectively. (MindaNews)
