At least one person was killed while 30 others were injured following an explosion inside a bus in Zamboanga City, the city government said Friday.
In its Twitter account, the Zamboanga city government said a Biel Transit bus “suddenly exploded upon arrival” at the Labuan Terminal in Tomas Claudio Street at 2:15 pm.
The city government urged the public to “please remain calm and vigilant at all times”.
Initial count placed the number of wounded victims at 19, two of whom were infants identified by the city police as 7-month-old Wayne Lumigi, and one-year-old Farnisha Jain.
But in its 6:03 p.m. tweet, the city government said the number of injured people had climbed to 30.
Acting City Mayor Cesar Iturralde condemned the bombing. He said he was not discounting the possibility that the incident may have been an act of terror, but added it could also be extortion-motivated.
Iturralde asked the police to identify and arrest the soonest time possible the person/s responsible for the latest bomb attack in the city.
“With this incident, the police should always be on their toes and alert,” he added.
