Taiwanese investors keen on expanding in Mindanao

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 21 March) – Taiwanese investors are setting their eyes on Mindanao as the next possible area for their aggressive expansions, Mindanao Business Council (MBC) executive director Rolando Torres said.

Torres told “Wednesdays at Habi at Kape” that some 23 Taiwanese companies in automotive, electronics, agriculture, wellness, and medical industries are exploring business opportunities in Mindanao.

“There are a lot of companies in Taiwan who are interested to explore the market of Mindanao…It can be two-way process, while exploring market we can explore how we can take advantage of their presence here and explore what we can offer to them,” he added.

He said the Taiwanese are set to discuss with 23 Mindanawon businessmen for the possible forging of joint ventures during the Taiwan Trade Mission 2018 at the Marco Polo Hotel Davao set on Thursday.

The event, organized by Taiwan External Trade Development Council in partnership with Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) and MBC, has lined up 200 business meetings between Taiwanese and Mindanawon business executives, he said.

“The interests or offers were made to address the requirements for distributorship, dealership and direct supply – most of them are interested to ink an agreement –while also considering exploring business tie-ups with companies that are coming in,” he said.

Torres said he hopes the local counterparts would be receptive to the possible entry of Taiwanese companies here as they are want to strengthen their presence in Mindanao

“We hope our local counterparts would be receptive. They are very excited to come here, they are very positive about Davao. The first plan was to hold it in Manila but the Taiwanese companies wanted to have another one here,” he added.

He said the government’s massive campaign for investments in Mindanao stirred the interest of the Taiwanese companies who realized the “potential of Mindanao cannot only be dealership of products but also business and trade.”

He said MECO, as the “unofficial link between the Philippines and Taiwan,” is set to reciprocate by bringing Filipino delegates to a goods expo in Taiwan by June this year.

“We were told to recommend some companies (Mindanao) that can join them during that mission,” he said. (Antonio L. Colina IV/MindaNews)
