GENERAL LUNA, Siargao Island (MindaNews/11 June) – It’s really tantalizing when you come close to this island. This tiny place located in front of the town of General Luna (GL) is such a perfect place if you want to put yourself in the state of seclusion. Yes, you can because no one lives in the island.\

But why go alone when you have friends ready to share some adventure with you and go mad crazy in this small paradise?
Guyam is so near the town that you can get to the island in just a couple of minutes.
The white sand beach that faces the shorelines of GL, as how the town is known too, mesmerizes a beach-bum like me to come to her. It is as if the trees are waving at me, beckoning its arms at me and embrace her.
Being in the surfing Mecca of the country, a traveler should not miss the chance to set foot in this island even before or after hitting the waves of Cloud 9 of General Luna.
It was in 2007 when I first set foot in this tiny island with my best buddy Jesson J. Morata, a freelance writer and now the information officer of the Department of Health in Region 7.
We toured the island by just kayaking and it was such great fun that we forgot to bring our camera. In the end, while we never had a single picture taken as souvenir, the memories of that trip were already etched on our minds, never forgotten.
And my recent visit to the same island was still fun and filled with adventure and pleasure.
A few Sundays ago, I was in General Luna again.
It was during this one Sunday visit that a thought sprang to mind when a friend, Prudencio Meras III, decided to go to the beach after a basketball game.
While at the beach relaxing and inhaling the unpolluted air of General Luna, we naturally saw the islands of Daku and Guyam. Like hungry adventurers of old, Prudencio and I decided to go boating to Guyam Island before sunset.
This time, I did not forget to bring my camera with me.
So off we went and borrowed a fisherman’s boat and paddled our way to the island.
With our “small baon” – a freshly baked hot bread called “pan de surf” and a pitcher of juice, our trip was already exciting as it is.
Upon setting foot, I grabbed my bag and took my camera and immediately took pictures of the beauty of the island.
Guyam was amazing!
The white sand beach, like white sugar, was superbly tantalizing! I ran through the beach leaving my footprints behind and freely took shots to my heart’s content.
I made silhouette shots with much gusto and I pushed my camera to its limits just to capture the heavenly shades of the twilight.
The natural reef situated at the back part of the island look even beautiful.
I saw some birds still hunting for food on the shore.
There were few cottages built in the island, perfect for beach addicts like me.
The short time that I toured the island was indeed fun, at least I was able to return to this island with pictures to leave prints for others to see and discover. (Roel N. Catoto / MindaNews)
