BACKGROUND, EXHIBIT NOTES, AND PROFILE ARTISTS OF TABULA RASA
BACKGROUND
For a long time, the Davao art scene has been in a bland mood – murag kape nga wala’y klarong timpla. It needed brewing to create an aroma that will stimulate the community of Davao artists. And so this is what Tabula Rasa set out to do.
Since its inception in 2013, Tabula Rasa (which means “blank canvas”) has continuously brewed the Davao art scene with gatherings and events to stimulate the creative spirit of art practitioners, including plans to boost the Davao art market growth by featuring all artists and their works in one directory. It is bringing the Davao arts scene to a flourishing development in visual arts, encouraging expression and creativity from different schools of thought. It is ever conscious that the world of art always begins with a blank canvas.
Tabula Rasa is among the major participants of the upcoming art event Mindanao Art Fair & Con on October 4-6 at GMall Atrium showcasing the works of sevnen artists: sculptor Brando Cedeno, painters Daryl de leon Descallar, Dinky Munda, Jane Ramos, Madoline de la Rosa, & Jojo Tolentino.
EXHIBIT NOTES:
TABULA RASA ART GROUP’s theme (for the twelve classic impressionistic and realistic paintings and three heroic- sized sculptural pieces) is “LEAVING and LIVING”. This is about the Cycle of Life consistent with the overall theme “Mindanao Rivers of Life” chosen for the 1st Mindanao Art Fair Exhibition & Conference ( M.A.F.E.C ).
This exhibit participated by five galleries/groups from Davao City and a similar number from outside Davao promises to be the most prestigious exhibit for Art and artists of Mindanao.
PROFILE OF ARTISTS:
DADAI JOAQUIN
A self-taught artist, Dadai is an impressionist who portrays the beauty around her through the lens of her own feelings and emotions. She uses oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, and even soil to express herself in ways that reveal her passion for light. “I am fascinated by the physics behind it,” she says, “the myriad colors that can radiate from a single ray of white light, and the way it reflects and bounces to give color, depth, and even meaning to objects.”
Because light is ever present, Dadai does not wait for inspiration to strike before she paints. “Light is what inspires me: how it strikes an object, and how an object comes to life with it. While light is by itself invisible, it is light that makes us see things. I seek to paint this light, and it is possible to get lost in the beauty of it.”
JANE RAMOS
Ever since she was young, Jane Ramos has had a healthy interest for many things; sports, friends, music, adventure. But she was particularly fond of—and naturally gravitated towards—art. Her paintings are more of realism and impressionism.
She loves to reflect on things around her and connects it with life. Believes that realism is not just a mere duplicate of what is seen but a matter that can be so true to one’s inner life as well.
She gives more importance on light as the source of all colors when it strikes any objects. It amuses her still how light affects the objects and cast different tiny colors juxtaposed on all parts revealing the beauty of the subject. Her imagination is influenced by it and believes the significance of everything God has created.
MADOLINE DELA ROSA
A visionary as a child, she saw what many has not seen. This vision served as strong foundation of her faith. Her fondness to draw faces and figures began in her childhood. She just draws and paints realistically whatever she sees.
The eyes that glow of life is what she loves most in portrait which is her forte. Through the eyes being the center of the human head, she sees the omnipresence of the Divine Master.
JOJO JIMENEZ
I am a traditional realist painter by heart. But I also see myself as a story teller of my artworks. When I start to conceptualize it, plenty ideas are formed in it like a plot twist in a story, changes of characters, colors, or subjects are inevitable.
I make sure my art captures the viewer’s interest so they can also make their own interpretation, views, and ending on my art work.
BRANDO A. CEDEÑO
Brando Cedeño is an artist who works on sculptures and paintings as exemplified in his range of commissions. His artworks are greatly influenced by his interest in striking balance and unity of opposite elements that he has observed from real people, places, animals and things. He gives importance to movements, transitions, emotions, and character of his subjects to make a distinct artwork.
He particularly prefers to create both realism and impressionism paintings of landscapes, people, animal and nature. His paintings and sculptures of wildlife subjects particularly horses, eagles, and lions which exude power with graceful elegance are among his greatly commissioned works. In his human sculptures, he unrelentingly pursues to capture the character, energy and presence of the subject by mastering human anatomy with great emphasis in body proportions and muscle movements, and complementing it the decorative effects of drapery, clothe and suitable figures to create an uncompromising beauty of the sculpture.
With many major commissioned works in Catholic churches and theming contracts on theme parks and commercial buildings, Cedeño sculptures and paintings are sought by his art collectors in local and international private and public collections.
Brando is a founding member of the Davao Art Group Tabula-Rasa. He was born in 1968 in Davao City. He graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Painting at the Ford Academy of the Arts in Davao City. After completing his formal art education, Brando pursued his studies in sculpture in response to his need to explore and expand his passion in art. He travelled in Manila, Cebu and some parts in Asia where he studied sculptures, and learned its traditional process. At present, his skill in creating sculptures has expanded to using plasteline clay, silicone mold, ceramics, fiberglass, stonecast resin and bronze resin. His personal drive and intensive study in creating human and animal sculptures harnessed his skills and sensitivity to depict the right anatomical structures and movements of his sculptures. He can work in a variety of artworks and cast sculptures in various scales from small to life-size and monumental sculptures.
Brando has joined numerous collaborative exhibits since 1995. Among his sculptures includes: En Movimiento (size: 3ft x 15ft) , The Ascension of the Lord (size: 14ft tall), The Divine Mercy of The Lord (size: 10 ft tall), The Lion’s Gate in Buda (size: 4ft tall), The Last Supper ( 2.5ft x 8ft bas-relief), Stallion (4ft tall), Tulips (2ft x 4ft bas relief), Koi (2ft x 8ft bas-relief), Tiger (3ft x 7ft bas-relief), etc.
