PCCI threatens to sue MinBC over Minbizcon

The issue: PCCI-Mindanao threatening to sue MinBC should the latter hold a separate Mindanao Business Conference (Minbizcon).

PCCI-Mindanao, through vice president Estrellita Juliano-Tamano, has stressed that no other organization can stage the Minbizcon. The MinBC has announced plans to hold its own Minbizcon.

She pointed out that Minbizcon is PCCI’s intellectual property right because the group registered it with the Department of Trade and Industry. Thus the threat to sue MinBC.

In a related development, Tony Veneracion, president of the General Santos City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (GSCCCIFI), which is supportive of the PCCI, said he was surprised by MinBC’s plan to hold a separate Minbizcon.

He said that the GSCCCIFI was designated by the PCCI to host this year’s Mindanao area business conference and that they already got the support of the General Santos City government in hosting the event.

PCCI’s Minbizcon is tentatively set a week after the Tuna Festival, which is normally held in early September.

Veneracion said the GSCCCIFI has adopted a position that it belongs to an umbrella organization which is the PCCI. But he said they are open to the idea of becoming a member of MinBC, but only after its legal row with PCCI is resolved.

The dispute erupted in the open late last year after the PCCI reconfigured Mindanao’s regional business chambers from eight to five supposedly without consultations with the MinBC. It was further dramatized by the disaffiliation of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry from the PCCI. (MindaNews)
