Tuna exporter’s water treatment facility fails test

The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) thus ordered Pescarich Manufacturing Corp. to repair its waste water treatment facility.

Water samples taken from Pescarich’s treatment facility last week contained 135 parts per million (ppm) per liter of biological oxygen demand (BOD), which is beyond the allowable limit of 130 ppm, said Valiente Lastimoso, CENRO head.

In a local TV interview, he urged the firm to “immediately work for the improvement” of the water treatment facility to avoid worsening the condition in the area.

Complaints of foul smell coming from the Pescarich plant by residents in Balunto, Barangay Labangal prompted environment officials to investigate the matter.

Lastimoso said they also directed Pescarich to submit its response on the complaint to the agency’s air and water pollution monitoring program unit. The company was also ordered to refund the money used by the local government for the series of water sampling tests.

Robert Abayon, Pescarich quality assurance supervisor, said his company will abide by the CENRO’s requirements.

He said that the newly installed water treatment facility is still being tested and assured they will contain the foul smell coming from the plant.

Formerly known as the Yamaoka Nippon Corp., Pescarich is engaged in the processing of large tuna products targeted for foreign markets. (MindaNews)
