Mindanao-based fuel retail firm expands operations

George Nifras, Phoenix sales manager, said the company's recent expansion program is in Southeastern Mindanao and Caraga regions, North Cotabato and Bukidnon with new  branches in Valencia City, Bukidnon; San Francisco, Agusan del Sur, and Lizada, Davao City.

The Mindanawon-owned fuel distribution firm has vowed to tap the smaller markets in Mindanao. Nifras said they will also open 100 more branches in Northern Mindanao, Visayas and Luzon next year.

Started in 2005, Nifras said business has been good as they cater to areas where the market is not yet saturated. He said they put up stations in areas far from big cities and put up stations on an 800 to 1,000 square meter land in contrast with other companies which require at least 2,000 square meters.

"That's our advantage, bringing convenience closer to the people. We enter the markets others have not tapped yet," he told reporters at the NCCC Mall Thursday, where the company was the lone exhibitor from the fuel retail business in the 9th Davao Trade Exhibition (DATE) 2007 that opened on the same day.

Nifras said they have been marketing their services to be the "brand choice in Mindanao" for the fuel retail business.

Phoenix, owned by Dennis Uy of Tagum City,  is listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange.

Incorporated in May 2002, the firm has grown from a simple family venture to one of the most successful businesses in Davao and the Southern Mindanao area.

In 2004, the company started distributing petroleum products to commercial entities in Mindanao, under the name Davao Oil Terminal Services Corporation (DOTSCO).

Later that year, it serviced the petroleum needs of Cebu Pacific and opened its first retail station in 2005. (Walter I. Balane/MindaNews)
