ComVal creates jewelry body

The province has hosted large- and small-scale gold mining for decades now.

The provincial government has vowed to turn the province into the "next jewelry industry capital of the Philippines," the DTI said in a press release.

Uy will head the task force along with the DTI provincial project officers.

The multisectoral body also includes national government agencies such as the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The body will provide industrial research and development services; appropriate equipment and machinery; to ensure transfer of appropriate technology; to identify market linkages and opportunities; to conduct trade fairs and promotions and other activities to strengthen the industry.

Local government offices along with the Diwalwal Artisan Entrepreneurs Cooperative (Darteco) and Compostela Valley Jewelry Makers Association are also members of the task force.

The province is known for its precious mineral resources and mining sites but has remained largely a supplier of gold and silver.

The local government in Monkayo town where the famous Mt. Diwata (more popularly known as Diwalwal) is,  has identified jewelry-making as its One Town One Product priority.  (Walter I. Balane/MindaNews)
