DTI opens center for small and medium enterprises in GenSan

Edgar Soguillon, Senior Trade and Industry Development Specialist of the DTI here said that the center was created for the implementation of YAMAN Gensan, Area Productivity Council, and the One Town One Product (OTOP).

Soguillon said he has trained four DTI staffers at the center to become experts in business consultancy, microfinance, market linkaging, and providing trainings to clients.

He said the local government also assisted the DTI in putting up the center.

SMED Council Inc. has members from the Business Resource Center, City Bankers Association of General Santos, Gensan Foundation, Muslim Business Forum, PhilExport Socsksargen Chapter, Socsksargen Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries, and Region 12 Producers Association.

Maria Theresa S. Pacheco of the City Bankers Association of General Santos heads the council.

Soguillon said he is glad that private organizations are helping the government strengthen the local economy.

He said more people in the city are interested to engage in small businesses.

DTI can assist in businesses like marine product processing, fruit processing, production of gift items, decors, and handicrafts, meat processing, information and communication technology, and tourism.

He added that aside from SMED Council Inc. there is an advisory body called “SMED Council” with members from the city government, national government agencies involved in enterprise development, and non-government organizations.

As an advisory body, SMED Council is responsible for strengthening the development of small and medium enterprises through assistance in policy making.

Soguillon considers the SMED Council Inc. as an “industry partner.” (Gandhi C. Kinjiyo/MindaNews)
