Businessmen want a slot in GRP-MILF peace talks

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/18 September) — Business leaders also want a slot, even as observer, in the peace negotiations between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The suggestion was included in the shortlist that Robert Quinto, president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII), read to President Benigno Aquino III during the latter’s brief meeting with businessmen at the Marco Polo Hotel on Friday.

“We want the President to address the peace and order concern in Mindanao with the following suggestions: Engage the private sector or the citizenry in the peace process, probably give them a slot in the peace negotiation, even as an observer,” Quinto said shortly after the President arrived at the room full of Southern Mindanao business and political leaders.

Quinto added, however, that the businessmen will refer the proposal to Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita “Ging” Deles.

Earlier in the week, Secretary Deles said she is confident that peace talks will resume “before November” this year.

The last time the government and MILF peace panels met was on June 3, where they signed a “Declaration of Continuity for Peace Negotiations

The President said during his state of the nation address in July that the government is prepared to resume talks with the MILF after the Ramadan, which ended September 9 this year. (Germelina Lacorte/Mindanews)
