GenSan confab aims to draw P500M in investments

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/05 October) – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is targeting to generate some P500 million worth of new investments in Region 12 or Southwestern Mindanao during a two-day regional investment conference that will open here Wednesday.

Dorecita Delima, DTI- Region 12 assistant director, said they have invited at least 200 prospective investors and buyers from various parts of the country as well as producers of emerging local products to join the conference and explore new trade and investment arrangements in the area.

“(The conference) will gather our buyers, investors and producers into one roof and usher them to link up for potential long-term partnerships through possible marketing and investment deals,” she said in a press conference in Koronadal City Monday afternoon.

The gathering, dubbed 2nd Region 12 ICON or Investment Conference, is slated on October 6-8 at the Family Country Hotel and Convention Center here.

The conference, which focuses on the theme: “Business Opportunities thru Clustering Industries,” will feature marketing and investment presentations, industry break-out sessions, market-matching discussions, trade exhibits and tours of major ecotourism attractions in Region 12.

Region 12 covers the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, North Cotabato and the cities of Koronadal, General Santos, Tacurong, Cotabato and Kidapawan.

Delima said this year’s investment conference will highlight the region’s 10 “hot” industries and products that have vast potentials of dominating the markets in the country and eventually abroad.

Presently, she said the identified “hottest” industries and products in the region in terms of investment and market opportunities are moringa or malunggay, business process outsourcing or BPO, cassava, coffee, milkfish, bamboo, resorts and hotels, rubber, creative industry and coconut.

“We invited the buyers and investors themselves as speakers so our local producers will get the real picture of the existing markets and the required standards for their products,” Delima said.

She said among those who confirmed to join the conference are Dr. Eduardo Morato, president of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and ABS-CBN Bayan Foundation Inc.; James Laureano of Holsum Foods Inc.; Danilo Manayaga of Secura International; Pablito Chua, president of the Philippine Rubber Industries Association; Leopoldo Titular, assistant vice president and manager of San Miguel Foods Inc.;

Camarines Sur Gov. Luis Ray Villafuerte; Justino Arboleda, chief executive officer of Coco Technologies Corporation; Ramon Macaraig, vice president for Technical Services of Alson’s Aqua Corporation; Lizabel Holganza, president and chief executive officer of ZipIT Solutions Inc. and Nanoscript Inc.; and, Engr. Rodolfo Pollente of Nakayama Technology Corp.

Trade Undersecretary for Regional Operations and Development Group Merly Cruz will be leading discussions on “Industry Clustering as Strategic Tool for Regional Development.”

Aside from DTI, the 2nd Region 12 ICON is being supported by the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Tourism, Philippine Coconut Authority and the Commission on Information and Communication Technology.
