Sun to build 400 more cell sites in Mindanao

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/20 Jan) – Sun Cellular will be putting up 400 more cell sites all over Mindanao within the year to increase its coverage of the island.

This will bring Sun’s cell sites in Mindanao to 900, according to lawyer William S. Pamintuan, senior vice president for legal services of Digital Telecommunications Philippines, Inc. (Digitel) that owns Sun.

“Majority of our plans this year is to concentrate in Mindanao as we see a lot of potential market here,” Pamintuan said in a press conference at the Microtel Inn here Thursday during the company’s press conference for its newest product dubbed Sun Magic Zone Mindanao.

He said they will also build 600 more cell sites in Luzon and the Visayas. At present, Pamintuan estimates Sun’s cell sites between 6,000 and 7,000 all over the country. Sun started operations in 2003.

He admitted, though, that his company’s cell sites are still relatively small compare to the two bigger networks. Smart Communications, he pointed out, has 12,000 cell sites.

Sun is targetting a 50-percent increase in subscribers this year.

Last year, Sun’s subscribers all over the country reached 6 million, contributing a revenue increase of 20 percent compared to 2009.

Joan C. Dueñas, vice president for prepaid marketing, said their Sun Magic Zone Mindanao offers unlimited Sun-to-Sun calls and texts within Mindanao for as low as P10 per day. Its SIM pack costs P20 that comes with unlimited Sun-to-Sun calls and texts for two days.

He said that Sun now offers the lowest rate in the market. “On Jan. 28, we will also be launching text unlimited load for as low as P5 which is valid for one day. The load is exclusively for Sun Magic Zone and Sun subscribers throughout Mindanao,” Dueñas said. (MindaNews)
