DA pledges P50M for Basilan’s rubber industry

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanews/February 25) – Rubber production, a major industry in Basilan, will get a boost with the allocation of P50 million from the Department of Agriculture.

Gov. Jum Akbar said Friday the projects include a P30-million rubber nursery, micro-processing plants worth P10 million and a P10-million farm-to-market road from Tipo-tipo to Barangay Magkawa of the same town.

Aside from rubber, the other major crops of Basilan province are coconut, coffee, black pepper and African palm oil. Local farmers also grow palay, corn, cacao and cassava.

Akbar said she has requested the national government, through the DA, for financial support for the three projects.

Akbar said she personally submitted her request Thursday night to DA Secretary Proceso Alcala, who met with the officials from Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi provinces in this city.

She said the agriculture-related projects are among the development undertakings of the provincial government aimed to uplift the plight of the farmers in the province.

She said Alcala has pledged to source out funds from the DA for the implementation of the projects in Basilan.

Alcala stayed overnight Thursday in Zamboanga City and met with local DA officials after leading the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a fish port in Maimbung, Sulu. (MindaNews)
