Davao has quality people for BPO posts, but short on number

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/2 June) – Although the “quality is high” when it comes to the city’s human resource, Davao still lacks people to fill vacancies in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, Erriberto P. Barriga Jr., Information and Communications Technology of Davao executive vice-president, said at The Marco Polo Club 888 press conference Wednesday.

The possibility of Davao to become the number one site for BPO in the country is not far, where thousands more agents would be needed, Barriga said.

He pointed out that Davao is attractive for BPO investors because the salary scale is lower compared to Manila and Cebu, although he was quick to note that “we are still able to upscale the benefits and salaries.”

Barriga pointed out, too, that there is lower attrition scale in Davao, meaning that the rate of people leaving a company to move elsewhere is minimal.

He also noted that job seekers in the BPO industry are also looking for positions other than voice agents, or those working in call centers. “It is safe to assume that the voice sector is here to stay. Our concentration is to try to level-up the skillset on non-voice or what we call the ‘KPO (knowledge process outsourcing) industry,” he said.

Barriga was referring to manpower for software development, engineering design and innovation, graphic design and other possible fields of skill to constitute the industry.

While tapping of resources from outside the city can be among the first options, Barriga points the advantage to focus on “equipping our resources especially in Davao.”

It was disclosed earlier this year that there are eight new projects considered in the city to provide locations for prime information technology and business process outsourcing companies. The space would be alloted for investors on such industries to generate more employment.

Barriga also earlier relayed that in 2010, contact centers were able to hire 9,800 full-time employees, increasing from just 5,000 in 2009. (MindaNews)
