Bayan Muna pledges tools to enhance South Cotabato’s bamboo industry

KORONADAL CITY—Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Teodoro Casino has pledged to provide a bamboo node equipment worth P325,000 to help develop the bamboo craft industry in South Cotabato.

The equipment that will be delivered to the South Cotabato provincial government will benefit the craftsmen involved in engineered bamboo products.

Casino made the pledge after a recent visit to the Regional Industrial, Technology and Trade Expo here, which was part of the province’s celebration of the 13th T’nalak Festival.

The equipment will be composed of one unit bamboo pole cutter, two units of twin rip saw and a treatment vat where bamboo poles are cut, sliced and treated before the final processing.

Previously, the Banga Kawayan Arts Association, which supplies bamboo materials for nipa hut or bahay kubo producers in the province, has received the same equipment through the Department of Trade and Industry provincial office.

The South Cotabato government also committed to fund the establishment of a bamboo hub, which costs P4 million, to produce bamboo furniture and fixtures for the province’s use and that of other government agencies.

The proposed hub will be the South Cotabato Productivity and Technology Center.

The Cottage Industry Technology Center will evaluate the facilities of the bamboo hub before its initial operation.

The South Cotabato Bamboo Industry Development Council earlier inked a memorandum of agreement with the Banga Kawayan Arts Association directing the use of bamboo for at least 25 percent of the desks, tables and chairs of public schools and other government offices.

Earlier this year, the Department of Education Division Office of South Cotabato committed to buy at least 20 percent bamboo-made desks and armchairs for the annual requirement of all public schools in the province.

The bamboo industry is becoming one of the fastest growing businesses in South Cotabato.
To honor it, a bahay kubo competition was held during the recent T’nalak Festival and was one of the week-long festivities’ tourist attractions.

Bamboo house designers and craftsmen displayed a wide range of bahay kubo designs and inspirations to further boost the industry in the province. (MindaNews)
