Duterte hints he might quit before his last term ends

Duterte,62, tried to evade the question when asked by reporters Thursday at the Grand Men Seng Hotel before thanking the city's barangay captains, mostly members of his Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod party.

The mayor earlier said he will retire from politics after finishing his last term and go into hunting.

The Dutertes, both ran with political unknowns as opponents, won with very wide margins based on the Namfrel count as of May 19 which covered around 85 percent of the precincts.

The mayor's closest opponent got a measly 1,682 votes compared to his 338, 909. The younger Duterte appears to have a tougher lone opponent, Dr. Jeff Jo, but he only managed to get 38, 997 votes as compared to her 310, 358

Davao City reporters monitored the Duterte camp prior to Election Day over rumors the some candidates for councilors became keen on topping the race in anticipation of the mayor’s possible resignation halfway through his term to accept a Cabinet position.

Based on the law of succession, the move would make Sara mayor and the number one councilor vice mayor. Sara, 28 is the first woman to become this city’s vice mayor.

Based on the final and unofficial count from Namfrel Davao as of May 19 with around 85 percent of precincts tallied, six candidates are leading the race for the city council in the city’s three districts.

Getting big chunks of the vote are Councilors Ma. Belen Acosta (86, 405) and Leonardo Avila III (79, 887) from the first district; neophyte Louie John Bonguyan (75, 836), son of the outgoing vice mayor Luis and re-electionist Diosadado Angelo Mahipus(71, 613) from the second district; and deputy mayor at-large Myrna Dalodo Ortiz (63, 900) and re-electionist Wilberto Al-ag (60,017).

During the campaign, the mayor has introduced Sara as the one that could continue the family’s legacy to Davao City politics.

In the run-up to the election period and prior to the appointment of Hermogenes Ebdane as Secretary of the Department of National Defense, Duterte revealed that a national government official offered him the same post.

Duterte told reporters he declined the post for a number of reasons, including his dislike to work with the American military.

Prior to fielding his daughter as running mate, Duterte said he would resign if Dabawenyos voted for an erstwhile ally, former mayor Benjamin de Guzman. Reports said the mayor fielded Sara, who he said topped surveys, after learning that De Guzman was planning to run for vice mayor.

De Guzman eventually ran for representative of the city's third district against Duterte’s bet Isidro Ungab and a sitting councilor who is a scion of the Lopezes. Official and unofficial counts showed Ungab is winning
