The increase came following the approval of a P2-million additional fund for the Magtutudlo Sa Barangay program in a special session of the Provincial Board on Saturday in Barangay Amas here.
Volunteer teachers who have served since the program started in 2002 received a monthly honorarium of P1,500. Half of the amount came from the barangays and the other half from the provincial government.
The MSB program, a brainchild of Gov. Emmanuel Piñol, started in 2002 to address the lack of teachers in far-flung barangays by tapping the services of qualified community-based teachers.
“We know that this is not much, but it shows our sincere appreciation of the service provided by our Magtutudlo Sa Barangay to the children of North Cotabato,” Piñol said.
North Cotabato Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Gloria Mudanza thanked the Provincial Board and the governor for supporting quality education in North Cotabato.
She said the additional P1,500 honorarium could help augment the basic needs of the volunteer teachers who have patiently waited for regular jobs at the Department of Education.
“We are thankful to our MSB that even with the meager honorarium they are still very much willing to impart their expertise to our children especially in the far-flung areas of North Cotabato,” she stressed. (Williamor A. Magbanua/MindaNews)
