DOST-12 announces scholarships

Dr. Zenaida P. HR Laidan, regional director of the Department of Science and Technology, said that those belonging to the top five percent of their class can avail of scholarship programs from the DOST’s Science Education Institute (SEI) for four- or five-year baccalaureate degrees.

She said that there are also scholarship slots for graduate students — masteral or doctoral — in the DOST’s thrust to further accelerate and enhance S&T expertise.

These scholarship programs, Laidan said, aim to produce and develop high quality human resources that would take active participation and leadership roles in S&T activities not only in the region but in the whole country as well.

Laidan, however, did not disclose the slots allotted for Region 12.

Application forms are available at the DOST regional office and at the provincial science and technology centers. Deadline of submission is Nov. 10.

In Region 12, the examination will be conducted on Dec. 3, 2006 at the University Laboratory School-University of Southern Mindanao (ULS-USM) in Kabacan town, North Cotabato; Notre Dame University in Cotabato City; Mindanao State University-General Santos City, Notre Dame of Marbel University in Koronadal City; and at the Sultan Kudarat Polytechnic State College (SKPSC) in Tacurong City.

Laidan said qualified beneficiaries will receive financial assistance in the form of monthly living allowance for 10 to 11 months.

Qualified applicants who would take up physics teaching course will receive a P4,000 allowance per semester while those taking up DOST-SEI priority courses will receive P3,000.

Other privileges include book allowance and school supplies at P3,000 per academic year, outright grant for prescribed military science and physical education uniform of P500, and P4,500 tuition fee subsidy per semester.

Laidan said the DOST also would give additional privileges during summer, including a monthly living allowance of P1,500 and book allowance worth P500.

Furthermore, privileges include transportation allowance and group health and accident insurance.
