GenSan city hall now a wi-fi zone

The installation of wifi services via Smart's SmartBro product allows free wireless access to internet users within the premises of the city hall through their wifi-ready laptops, PDAs and dual-mode phones.

General Santos City is the first local government unit in Southwestern Mindanao to gain free access to Smart’s wifi services.

Steve Alcoseba, Smart general manager for sales for Visayas and Mindanao, said the free installation is one of several corporate responsibilities of the company "to bring relevant services to various communities."

Smart also recently tied up with Mindanao Sate University for the construction of information and technology laboratory for students "to take advantage of new technologies."

Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. welcomed Smart's initiatives and said the free broadband services "is in line with my vision to make General Santos City more economically competitive."

The agreement between Smart and the local government was first announced during the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Kalilangan Festival last Feb. 16.
