The tricycle association relayed their stand to City Councilor Lauro Taynan Jr., chair of the committee on transportation and communication, during the public consultation hearing on Tuesday.
Engr. Victorino Carbonell, KITA president, said in a radio interview last year over dxND Radio for Peace that his group would reduce fare by one peso if the price of gasoline would go down below P40.
Price has since dropped to a little over P30 a litter, but the tricycle drivers refuse to reduce fare. Some operators and drivers have complained of the ever increasing of prices of motorcycle spare parts.
Carbonell claimed that prices of engine oil and motorcycle tires are still very high, thus becoming a burden to tricycle owners who own two or more units, and to the tricycle drivers themselves.
He said that drivers have complained that their daily income is still not enough to sustain the basic daily needs of their families, like food and education.
Rennie, a tricycle driver for eight years now, appealed to the riding public to understand their situation. Drivers, he said, vowed to serve the riding public better in exchange of the P7.50 fare.
But Taynan said he will continue to appeal to the association for a reduced fare despite his failed first attempt during the public consultation hearing.
The neophyte city councilor said he understands the plight of the drivers but he also feels the sentiments of his constituents, especially the minimum earners. (Williamor A. Magbanua / MindaNews contributor)
