Mayor's driver sued for New Year's Eve shooting in Isulan

KIDAPAWAN CITY (MindaNews/03 January) – Authorities in Sultan Kudarat province today filed homicide and frustrated homicide charges against the driver of a municipal mayor in Maguindanao for wounding a balut vendor and killing her son on New Year’s Eve in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat.

Inspector Jojie Nicolas, chief of Isulan police, identified the suspect as Badrudin Kabad Zailon, driver of the municipal mayor of Datu Abdullah Sangki in Maguindanao.

Reports said Zailon was driving an Isuzu Fuego with his mother seated next to him when a stone thrown by a deranged man hit them while he was negotiating a curve along a landmark in Isulan called “round ball”, around 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Zailon’s mother was hit in her breast. Apparently irked upon seeing his mother in pain, Zailon allegedly drew his caliber .45 pistol and shot the mentally ill man.

But Zailon hit instead balut vendor Nelly Arenga and her 3-year-old son Sharmain, according to Nicolas.

Zailon’s mother and the victims of the shooting incident were rushed to the Sultan Kudarat Provincial Hospital in Isulan. The boy died while being treated at the hospital.

Police operatives in the area led by Nicolas immediately collared Zailon and detained him at the police station. (Malu Cadelina Manar/MindaNews)
