DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/26 September) — Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte shrugged off reports on renewed killings in the city but sternly warned reckless jeepney drivers they will not be given a “second chance.”
“These people will really kill,” he said, referring to abusive jeepney drivers who call themselves, ‘uso-uso,‘ notorious for reckless driving in the city.
“Don’t wait for a second chance,” Duterte warned the drivers during his Sunday television program “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa” (From the Masses, For the Masses).
He said going after these violators falls under the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and does not fall under the jurisdiction of the city anymore but he sternly warned reckless ‘uso-uso’ drivers for they could threaten people’s lives.
‘Uso-uso’ drivers have been known for overspeeding.
Duterte said the cruising speed of 70 kilometers per hour may have been acceptable in the 1970s when there were still a few people in the city but now that the place is already highly-urbanized, jeepneys are allowed only a speed of 40 kilometers per hour.
At the same time, Duterte brushed off reports on recent killings in the city. “Who are they? Criminals?”’ he asked and challenged both the government and non-government human rights groups to investigate. (Germelina Lacorte/MindaNews)
