In Memoriam: Mamasapano

You say you grieve for forty-four souls
who fell as they danced with Death
in the dawn
They were your sons
husbands fathers lovers friends
This is our land
And they came dancing with Death
in the dawn
And so like you we grieve for our sons
husbands fathers lovers friends
You say we’re wicked and vile
But it was your sons
husbands fathers lovers friends
who came to our land
and danced with Death
in the dawn
while babies smiled in their sleep
as mothers waited
for the swallows and sunrise
Now we pray for the dead
and those who are still to die
if more of your sons
husbands fathers lovers friends
come to dance with Death
in the dawn.
