COMMENTARY: Vote for our future

As the daughter of a victim of the Maguindanao massacre in Ampatuan, Maguindanao on November 23, 2009, where 58 were killed, 32 of them journalists including my Dad whose body was never found, my heart still cries for justice here on earth.

The running of some accused for elective positions shows that our system needs to be fixed. Some people are blinded, selling their votes for a few hundred pesos or even a ganta of rice. They allow themselves to be used not thinking of the future and at the end, they are the ones who complain a lot that poverty is not being solved.

Vice President Jejomal Binay (Presidential bet of UNA) being endorsed by the biggest political clan in Maguindanao, for me is something to think about.

I still am a registered voter, but still undecided as to my Presidential bet. I haven’t heard of any presidential candidate saying anything about how they will address the so-called “case of the century.” Is it because we are just “small people” compared to the Ampatuans?

We have a lot of promises from the 2010 Presidential elections. We were promised that justice will be served. Where are those promises now? In less than two months, it willb e another presidential election again. We were told that before election, we will get even partial justice in this case.

Should I expect? No, not until I see it done.

Binay being endorsed by the Ampatuans is something to think about. Of course, politics is politics and we know the Ampatuans still have have clout in Maguindanao.

We Filipinos should exercise our right of suffrage. In doing so, we should think of the future. The future is our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Will we allow them to suffer through our decisions today?

A few hundred pesos and a “ganta” of rice will make you have food on your table for a few meals. Is that enough?

Think a hundred times before you decide.

Vote wisely! Vote for the future! Vote according to your conscience! (Ma.
