TURNING POINT: Getting in Touch with the Departed: The Sea

NAAWAN, Misamis Oriental (MindaNews / 04 November) — To get immersed in the sea is one of the few precious luxuries of my life. I love the sea. It is the only thing in our transient world that offers a touch of eternity.

The seawater in every shore is connected to all seawaters in all seashores of the world, yesterday, today and tomorrow. Thus every time I have the opportunity to visit a new place along the coast, here and outside the country, I would always make it a point to swim or at least touch its sea. By so doing I feel directly and immediately connected to my sea at home, even to the many seas and seashores of my life where on the sand the purest joy of childhood and youth remains indelible despite the eternally rushing and mocking tides.

Swimming in the sea evokes in me memories of the departed ones, especially my doting grandfather and father, my frail but adoring mother who, in many times and in separate occasions in the past, would gladly stay with me in the beach cooling ourselves and watching the moving beauty of the sinking sun. They used to be with the waters that surround me now and I know and I could feel that they still are.

I will continue to touch the sea in every opportunity. I am here today but sooner or later I will be gone, too. But I will remain forever part of the eternal sea where all my loved ones, all my darling children will touch someday. There is no sweeter and more profound communion like this that transcends time and space.
