TURNING POINT: Of Truth and Silence

NAAWAN, Misamis Oriental (MindaNews/13 September) – There are thoughts to suppress, feelings to remain unexpressed, and words to keep unsaid, if you value something, like life itself or a relationship, more than the truth.

The gospel tells us the truth shall make us free. Indeed, it may set us free from the burden, anxiety, guilt and pain of keeping it, but never from the harsh and possibly deadly consequences of its revelation.

The consequences of expressing what is true could be more costly and damaging than burying it in the graveyard of silence, indifference and fear.

However, like soldiers who commit themselves to kill and be killed for such mythical symbolism as patriotism and love of country, there are also individuals, like journalists, who choose to put their lives at extreme risk, great hazards and dangers in pursuit of such personal mission and glory to enlighten the world with their perceived truth in the name of freedom, liberty and democracy.

Those who suffered and died for truth are called by society either as idiots, prophets or heroes. They are either despised and ridiculed, revered or glorified by those  below them, who lack the guts  or abilities to do what they have done.
