TURNING POINT: Weathering the Storm

NAAWAN, Misamis Oriental (MindaNews / 3 Oct) – The ninja cops were the best in the drug business. They came in sans capital; they know their clients pretty well, from the plushiest of condos to the murkiest of slums; continue to receive government compensation, are using government resources, and are unperturbed by the high command in the conduct of their trade.

In the hearing of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, visibly pissed PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde complained why the ninja cops issue against him six years ago is revived.

Why? Because his underlings who were found guilty were not dismissed and charged in court for their crime, and the recycling of drugs continues to this day permeating even into the heavily guarded national penitentiary now that he’s PNP chief. And the queen of recycled drugs has been untouched through the years despite PNP’s knowledge of her criminal trade.

Senator Gordon’s advice or suggestion that he resign will surely fall in deaf ears. To resign is an honourable act for those with honour still to protect and uphold. He betrays himself he who fights nail and tooth to hold on to an honourable post.

Given his access to the intelligence of the entire security forces of the state, the Commander-in-chief is, needless to say, aware of the ninja cop phenomenon. Why he turned a blind eye to the controversy and even appointed a tarnished officer to the highest PNP post is mind-boggling. Can you imagine the ramifications of the presidential attitude and act to the very centrepiece programs of his administrations—the war on drugs and corruption? So, we come to this odiously abominable situation where the primus police crime buster is, directly or indirectly, a criminal protector himself.

It is apparent that the President would not take the pain of sacking another of his trusted lieutenants to follow the mired BuCor chief Faeldon. If he wanted to, he could have done it after his meeting with former CIDG Chief Benjamin Magalong and incumbent PDEA Chief Aaron Aquino who updated him on ninja cops, or after he received the Senate ninja cops list. But no, he wanted DILG Secretary Eduardo Ano to make the recommendation after the conduct of another investigation. Of course, an honest-to-goodness probe deserving for a four-star general takes time to conclude. This may yet allow the beleaguered PNP Chief to weather the storm and complete his tour of duty on November 8, 2019.

That could be the best birthday gift of his life.
