Malong makers

Marina Arbolada (right) unfurls a malong she has just finished sewing inside a stall at the Barter Center in Zamboanga City. She and her fellow sewers would make an average of 60 malongs a day and earn one peso and fifty centavos for each malong. Arbolada and the women are contented earning P90 a day sewing malongs. “Better than nothing,” they said. Today, March 8, the Philippines join the rest of the world in celebrating the International Day of Women. Despite significant successes, majority of Filipino women are still living in abject poverty.  MindaNews Photo by Jimmy A. Domingo
