Alfredo Cahiles Gaborne, Jr., from Calinan, Davao City, tied with Nebo Allen Manuales Torres of the Negros Oriental State University in Dumaguete, with an 86.80 rating in the exam given by the Board of Geodetic Engineering in Manila, the Davao Catholic Herald reported.Ernie Evangelista, president of the John Paul II College, announced the good news of Gaborne’s success during the groundbreaking ceremony Friday for a seven-storey building, the newspaper said.Of 432 takers, only 170 passed, including Gaborne’s batchmates at the John Paul II College — Bartolome Zafra, Cherry Lou Olandria and Tito Epondulan  — giving the school a hundred percent passing average. The third among five children of Alfredo, Sr. and Carmen Cahiles, “Jun” as he is fondly called, said all he wanted was to be within the Top 20. “I even had fever the day prior to the exam. Siguro tungod sa pressure ug tungod pud sa sige ug ulan sa Maynila,” (Maybe because of the pressure and the frequent rain in Manila), he told the DCH. Gaborne’s two-year work experience in a private construction firm and his exposure in his aunt’s surveying office, and his natural fondness for numbers, prompted him to enroll in geodetic engineering. The college, named with papal permission after the late Pope John Paul II, is the only college in Southeastern Mindanao that offers geodetic engineering, DCH said. DCH quoted Engr. Joselito Lim, dean of the engineering department as saying he is  “very proud” of Gaborne, whom he described as a diligent student. Now on its third batch of graduates, JPIICD has produced nine geodetic engineers, two of them topnotchers. In 2005,  Pijie Piñero, now a teacher in his alma mater, landed 4th in the 2005 geodetic licensure exam. Gaborne will fly to Manila to take his oath before the Board on October 21 at the Manila Hotel. (MindaNews)
