Muslim Association on Climate Change Action (MACCA)

Salam!  We would like to inform you about  PCID’s latest initiative related to the Muslim Association on Climate Change Action (MACCA). The role of PCID  is to bring the scientists and environmentalists together, encourage the formation of the network, and then link the network with  MACCA.  This initiative is supported by DENR Secretary Ramon Paje.  Below is a background of the RTD:

The Muslim world has now become concerned on global warming and climate change because of 1.4 billion  Muslims, seventy percent live in countries which are very vulnerable to the impacts of climate change like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.  To respond to this global problem, the Muslim Seven Year Action Plan for Climate Change (M7YAP) was crafted in Istanbul, Turkey in June 2009 for all Muslim countries.  Part of this action plan was the convening of the First International Conference on Muslim Action on Climate Change in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia and this happened last April 9-10, 2010.

Two hundred (200) environment experts, academics and clerics from 30 countries with Moslem population, such as the United Arab Emirates, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, India, Africa, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait, Egypt, Britain, Indonesia and the Philippines attended this conference.  From the Philippines, Amina Rasul, the Lead Convenor of the Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy and Dr. Filemon G. Romero, Professor of Oceanography of Environmental Science of the Mindanao State University in Tawi-Tawi were invited as resource persons.

Among the major agreements in the conference was the promotion of collaboration among Muslim countries by mobilizing Muslim scientists, scholars and environmentalists to conduct research and act on climate change and environmental sustainability.

For the Philippines, studies have shown that many of the areas that are highly vulnerable to projected temperature increases, impacts of El Nino events, salt water intrusion and sea level rise are in Muslim Mindanao.  With the more than 5 million Muslims that are in harm’s way, there is a need to engage and mobilize scientists, scholars and environmental organizations to conduct research and information and
education activities on climate change and environmental sustainability.

DENR and PCID will host a Roundtable Discussion on Muslim Action for Climate Change on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, from 9 AM to 5 PM, to be held at the Imperial Palace Suites, Quezon City, Metro Manila.  We hope that Muslim scientists, scholars and environmentalists can share knowledge and experience related to environmental management and climate change issues.  It is our hope that the Roundtable Discussion
will lead to the formation of  a network or collegial body of Filipino Muslim scientists, scholars and environmentalists who will initiate a collaborative action on the pressing problems of climate change and other environmental concerns.
