DAVAO CITY —Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) announced today the launching and blessing of its Chemistry Analytical and Research Laboratory (CARL), which is slated on 10 March 2011 at the ADDU Jacinto Campus.

“The laboratory facility aims to serve chemical analyses needs of industry, government, and educational institutions in Mindanao and Sulu,” Mrs. Evelyn J. Tan said. Tan is the coordinator of the Chemistry Department, which supervises CARL operations.

With CARL, Ateneo also aims to strengthen the scientific research capability not only of its college and graduate programs in chemistry and other sciences but also that of other stakeholders doing testing and product and process development projects in the region.

Laboratory services include analyses of gold and other minerals; oil and oil products; water and wastewater; plant tissues; food and beverages; feeds and fertilizers, ore and limestone; coal and charcoal, among others.

“With this Lab, we signify our readiness to respond more fully to scientific, environmental, and economic challenges in the region,” Tan said. “We look forward to doing interdisciplinary research collaborations with industries, research and government agencies, and other schools and universities,” Tan added.

Registered chemists and scientists in the roster of the University Faculty form the backbone of Ateneo’s CARL. Further, CARL is home to analytical instrumentation that makes possible more intensive research studies in chemistry, biology, environmental and life sciences.

“Our newest and most sophisticated equipment is the latest model of Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (Shimadzu GCMS QP2010 ULTRA), which we acquired just three months ago,” Mrs. Tan said.

The GCMS is capable of detecting substances even in minute quantities. It has wide applicability in pharmaceutical and clinical processes, and in analyses of food and beverage products and pesticides and other residuals.

The GCMS QP2010 unit in the ADDU CARL is the first such instrument to be installed in the Philippines to date, according to Mylene Taduran-Chavez, senior application chemist of Shimadzu Philippines.

Other analytical instrumentations in the CARL include the Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectrometer, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Polarimeter, Refractometer, Kjeldahl apparatus, and the Adiabatic Bomb Calorimeter.

ADDU CARL is located on the fifth floor of del Rosario Hall, ADDU Jacinto Campus. The launching ceremony is at 3 PM, 10 March 2011.
