ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews / 16 Nov) — A former Vice President of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) here turned over on Monday the original manuscript of his book, “The MSU-IIT Story: Memoirs.”
Former Vice President and book author Manaros B. Boransing turned over the manuscript to the Department of History at the College of Arts & Social Sciences (CASS).
Dr. Rohane Derongan, Department Chair, Dr. Jamail A. Kamlian, Institute Secretary and Office of the Chancellor Chief of Staff, Ms. Marilyn Nario of the Office of the Institute Secretary (OIS) and Christine F. Godinez Ortega, immediate past director of the Office of Publication and Information, were present during the simple turnover ceremony.
Boransing’s book recounts his ascent from Dean in 1973 to the end of his term as Vice President in 1988.
During the turnover ceremony, Boransing narrated briefly how he wrote the book.
Two copies of the manuscript including text in Boransing’s handwriting on loose pages were turned over.
Derogongan said she was delighted to receive on behalf of the department “a primary source” of the beginnings of MSU-IIT. She said local students and foreigners have visited the department library to do research on Mindanao studies.
She agreed that Boransing is often dubbed the ‘Father of IIT’, a moniker that resulted in his vision and mission to make IIT at par with leading universities in the country, in particular, the national university, the University of the Philippines.
During his stewardship as Vice Chancellor, Boransing made MSU-IIT financially independent.
He embarked on an extensive recruitment program for a quality faculty and to ensure the completion of the buildings for the CASS, the gymnasium, the College of Engineering and the College of Science & Mathematics. He also supervised the plans for the construction of the College of Education which was completed during the term of his successor, Dr. Camar A. Umpa.
Boransing is a Certified Public Accountant who finished Accountancy at the University of the East in Manila. He took his Masters degree in Business Administration at Melbourne University in Australia and a Masters in Business Economics at Reading University in the United Kingdom.
After he left IIT, Boransing became consultant on Community Relations and Development of Lake Lanao and Agus River projects at the National Power Corp.
Later, he became manager of these projects then went on to be Undersecretary of Education for Mindanao Affairs. (MindaNews)
