Engay wins Davao Open Under 16 Chess title

Engay swept all his matches in the five-round swiss system format to clinch the title and pocket the cash prize.

Panabo City ’s Carmen National High School bet Ronnel Alsado prevailed over Jerwel Andoy, Kenneth James Roda and Adrian Acas, all scored 4 points, in a tiebreak to claim the second place honor.

Andoy of Jose Maria College , settled for third place in the event which aimed to continue chess grassroots development program in the region.

Sharing the limelight were Neptali Batucan III and John Ray Batucan who won the under 14 and under 12 crown respectively.

Neptali of Carmen National High School , registered 4.5 points to beat Kenneth John Tabada (4) and Clark Kent Annavieza (4) who placed second and third via tie break.
The Don Juan Dela Cruz Elementary School ace chesser John Ray, on the other hand, defeated tough foe Patrick Miguel Aquino of Stella Marris Academy in a tie break. Both canned 5 points after sweeping all their matches.

Dhan Vincent Macasero of Dona Assuncion Hizon Elementary School copped the third place with 4 points.

In under 10 class, Austin Jacob Literatus of Don Juan Dela Cruz Elementary School won the crown beating schoolmate Dhona Yngayo in a tie break. Both scored 4 points.

Bhing Joel Gimony of Compostela Valley ’s Lahi Elementary School clinched the third place honor with 3.5 points.

A total of 169 young woodpushers from various scholls across the region saw-action in the one-day chessfest supported by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Commissioner Leon “Binggoy” Montemayor and Davao City Sports Couincil Inc. headed by Vic Sai.
