Ex-PSC chair back on limelight with "Liga ni Butch"

The "Liga ni Butch" Inter-Faculty Basketball Tournament sponsored by William "Butch" Ramirez opens Saturday with three exciting matches.

Ramirez, one of the longest serving PSC officials with a stint of 10 years, the last three as its chair, will meet and greet the players and coaches of the 9 participating teams during the scheduled short opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. at the Holy Cross of Davao College Gymnasium.

Vice Mayor Sara Duterte and City Councilor Paulo Duterte are expected to join the former top honcho of the national sports agency, who was widely credited for the country's over-all triumph during the 23rd Southeast Asian Games, in the opening rites.

Jun Abrahan, tournament coordinator, said the main event of the opening day features the collision between Barangay Butch, the team of Ramirez, and Association of Barangay Captains.

City government's Gen. Services Office of Atty. Marvin Melodias will go up against the City Treasurers Office after the opening game of the conference that pit Department of Education – Davao Region and Holy Cross of Davao College set at 9:30 a.m.

"It will be a round-robin format cagefest featuring a total of nine teams," Abrahan said.

Trophies await the winners of the tournament presented by Ramirez, a former Ateneo de Davao University college varsity coach and city sports consultant.

Ramirez submitted his resignation following the country's dismal performance in the Beijing Olympics last August. (Rico Biliran / MindaNews)
